Congregational Care Ministry

| Jesus reached out to the sick and the lame, and
He cared for those who could no longer care for themselves. This spirit
of Christian compassion is carried on by First Presbyterian’s Congregational
Care Ministry.
This ministry is aimed at members of our church family who have been
hospitalized, or who are recuperating from illness, or who are confined
to home and cannot worship with the rest of their brethren. It also provides
care and assistance to those who are in transitional phases of life due
to the aging process.
The Congregational Care Ministry concerns three primary areas: hospital
visitation by staff members to church family members; correspondence
(by telephone or letter) to those coping with illness or injury in their
homes; and the service of home Communion.
Rev. Peter T. Haas is the staff member who oversees this part of the church’s
outreach, and more than 100 volunteers from the church are involved.
Staff members spend three days a week regularly visiting area hospitals,
with visits on additional days in special situations.
The Congregational Care Committee processes prayer requests and maintains
an active prayer chain. Notes of encouragement or condolence are sent,
and phone calls and mailings go out to ailing church family members.
Congratulations go out in honor of new births. It provides support groups
and offers a healing/prayer ministry.
Members who are homebound or in assisted-living facilities can feel
spiritually connected to the church through the service of Communion
by the staff and elders.
All of us face transitional periods in our lives. We are blessed that
the people of the Congregational Care Ministry haven’t forgotten
this. |

| GRIEF SUPPORT |
|
The loss of a loved one or drastic change in life produces the occurrence of grief. People are often surprised to find that they are unable to process grief by themselves. Often, people need a grief support group that offers understanding, guidance, and support enabling good management of their grief. A grief support group is available. It meets twice a month from 1:30-3:00pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays. This is an open ended meeting and anyone can be a part of it any time there is a need.

| PET THERAPY |
|
The Pet Therapy Program is a layman-based ministry of dedicated individuals who volunteer two important assets: their time and their pets, to bring joy and happiness to those hospitalized, shut-in, or disabled individuals through the use of therapy dogs.
The Pet Therapy teams of handlers and dogs have been certified to visit and provide friendship, and rehabilitative therapy to those who desire it.
The Pet Therapy teams provide visits to hospitals, nursing homes, elder care facilities, classrooms, camps and special literacy programs. Like music or art, visiting with a therapy dog offers people a special chance to enhance their healing emotionally.
