NEW DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTS

Mark Riddles brings considerable musical experience, versatility, and talent to the position of Director of Music and Fine Arts at First Presbyterian Church. He will assume his duties on June 18. A Presbyterian Church musician for the past twenty-five years, Mark looks forward to his new responsibilities, "It is a great privilege to be coming to First Church and an honor to be joining your staff. One of the pivotal factors in my decision was your pastoral leadership and the high quality of worship that is offered and expected at First Presbyterian Church."

Mark has served at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, a 4200-member congregation. In that position he conducted and provided leadership to a distinguished church music program that included a 96-voice Sanctuary Choir, a professional chamber ensemble singing in styles ranging form classical to vocal jazz and gospel, a brass and percussion ensemble, and a fully-graded choir school. Before joining Second Presbyterian Church, Mark was director of Music at Vienna Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, where he developed a church music program consisting of 14 choirs with 450 members. Earlier in his career he was chorister and baritone soloist with the United States Army Chorus performing at the White House and State Department.

Mark has a Master of Music from Northwestern University. He also has studied at Wesley Theological Seminary towards a M.Div. Mark’s wife, Sally, a daughter of a Methodist minister, runs Simone France, Inc., a small internet skin care line. They have three grown children.

Mark and Sally are a delightful charming couple filled with laughter and joy. They will be a blessing to First Presbyterian Church and continues our commitment to the excellence of music and take us to a new level.

GREETINGS FROM OUR NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR

I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

…I Corinthians 14:15

I would like to say how excited my wife Sally and I are to be joining the great family of faith at First Presbyterian Church of Flint. Your warm and gracious welcome is deeply appreciated. We are delighted to become a part of you.

It is a great privilege to be coming to First Presbyterian and an honor to be joining such an outstanding staff. This congregation has a distinguished history of music ministry both to our church and in the greater Flint community. You have been very well served by your pre-vious music directors, and it is both a challenge and a privilege to continue in that tradition of excellence. One of the pivotal factors in my decision to assume this position was the ex-ceptional pastoral leadership of John Musgrave. His collegial style, strong preaching, and sincere care for the congregation are very attractive to a vocational church musician. I am particularly appreciative of the high quality of worship that is offered and expected at First Presbyterian Church.

In serving among you, I will endeavor to be faithful to the following goals for the Ministry of Music:

To present music that satisfies the highest standards of text, composition, motivation, and performance as our offering to God.
To utilize music’s unique ability to teach the Holy Scriptures and doctrines of our faith.
To preserve and promote an understanding of and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Christian Church.
To teach, encourage, and support those who wish to develop new artistic expressions of the faith.
To provide a loving and caring community that provides support and encouragement for daily living.
To encourage, instruct, and support all believers in such a way that the music of the church provides a means of discovery and understanding, experience, and enjoyment of proclamation and sharing of God’s grace and the Christian faith.

I solicit your prayers and encouragement as together we endeavor to sing with the spirit and the understanding. Thanks again for your gracious welcome.

Blessings,

Mark Riddles
